Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is surgery to create a new breast after the removal of the breast or part of it due to cancer or another cause.

Breast reconstruction helps to improve the patient’s psychological health, self-esteem, sexuality and body image.

Who are candidates for breast reconstruction?

Patients who have undergone a total or partial mastectomy are candidates for breast reconstruction.

When should breast reconstruction be done?

Breast reconstruction can be done at the same time as cancer surgery (immediate reconstruction) or at a later time (second-year reconstruction). The decision depends on the type and stage of cancer, other treatments that may be needed, and patient preferences.

What are the basic steps of the procedure in any breast reconstruction?

– Create a new breast

– Possible modification of the opposite breast (mastopexy, reduction) in patients with contralateral mastectomy (optional)

– Creation of a new nipple

What are the main types of breast reconstruction?

– Breast reconstruction with silicone implants

– Flap reconstruction- This method uses tissue from another area of the body

– Combination of both methods.

The time and type of recovery depends on the type and stage of the cancer, other treatments that may be needed, and patient preferences. Thus, a meeting between the breast surgeon, the plastic surgeon, and the patient should take place immediately after the cancer is diagnosed in order to determine treatment options.
