Genioplasty (Chin surgery)

Correcting the proportions of the chin – relative to other facial features such as the nose and lips – can help one to achieve an enhanced facial profile.

What is Genioplasty?

Genioplasty is the surgical procedure that achieves not only the correction of the size, but also the projection of the chin. In many cases, genioplasty is combined with rhinoplasty, thus correcting the profile of the face (profiloplasty). In some cases, it is also combined with fat removal from the neck.

What is the goal of genioplasty?

The goal of genioplasty is to harmonize the proportions of the face, with the end result of boosting the patient’s self-confidence. Depending on the problem, the chin can be enlarged or reduced.

How is chin augmentation done?

In the case of a hypoplastic chin, chin augmentation should be done. For chin augmentation, the usual method is to place special silicone implants beneath the skin.

In addition to implants, autologous materials – from the body itself – can be used, such as bones, cartilage, but mainly fat, which we take from other parts of the face or body.

Injectable materials can also be used, such as hyaluronic acid, and this is a very easy way to augment the chin. However, the injectable materials are absorbable by the body and the effect lasts about 1 to 1.5 years.

How is chin reduction done?

In cases of a hyperplastic chin, chin reduction surgery should be performed by removing part of the lower jawbone.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure lasts 1 to 2 hours depending on the individual case.

What anesthesia is needed?

Depending on the individual case, surgery is either done under local anesthesia and sedation (for chin augmentation), or under general anesthesia (for chin reduction)

How long does recovery take?

In the first days after the procedure, there is a slight numbness, a slight discomfort, and a moderate pain, which subsides with taking a simple painkiller. Postoperatively, there is swelling, which lasts up to 3 weeks.

Are there obvious incisions?

No. The access incision is made inside the mouth.
